Full job description
This is a full-time, onsite role based at our headquarters in Denver, CO.
As Department Manager, you will lead the infrastructure design & support systems engineering organization and be responsible for delivering complex facility systems that enable advanced laser, pulsed‑power, and industrial operations on the path to putting fusion energy on the grid. This role blends innovative design, technical leadership, cross‑functional coordination, and oversight of engineering execution across all phases of facility development.
You will manage a multidisciplinary engineering team, guide system‑level design and technical execution, develop department standards and ensure facility assets are engineered for safety, manufacturability, constructability, reliability, and long-term operation. This role is both strategic and hands-on, requiring the ability to orchestrate senior technical contributors while driving day-to-day progress across design, integration, construction, and commissioning.We are looking for a technical leader to apply their expertise in simulation, systems thinking, and organizational leadership to positively impact the future of energy!
Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Department Formation
- Build and develop a high‑performing engineering team capable of delivering safety driven, complex facility and infrastructure projects on schedule and on budget.
- Define department roles, technical expectations, workflows, documentation standards, processes and design best practices.
- Provide engineering support to Programs and Projects for facilities design engineering activities across all phases of development, including requirements definition, system architecture, detailed design, integration, and validation.
- Work with Systems Engineering to translate system-level operational and functional requirements into detailed design plans, technical specifications, and milestones for assigned facility scopes.
- Mentor and grow engineers, conduct technical reviews, and promote continuous improvement in engineering execution and cross-functional collaboration.
- Support design strategies that enhance manufacturability, constructability, maintainability, reliability, and cost efficiency of facility assets.
- Partner with and manage contractors, vendors, and internal operations teams to ensure build readiness, develop test plans, and manage smooth design transfer into construction and operations.
- Ensure engineering decisions support overall program priorities, objectives, operational reliability, and future scalability.
- Ensure facility systems—mechanical, electrical, structural, utilities, and controls—are designed for safe, reliable, and maintainable long-term operation.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil / Structural, Industrial Engineering, or related discipline.
- Experience: 8+ years of experience in facility engineering, infrastructure systems, or complex technical environments.
- Experience managing engineering teams for multi-disciplinary technical execution.
- Skilled in translating high-level objectives into actionable engineering plans, resource allocations, and technical milestones.
- Strong understanding of facility mechanical, electrical, structural, and control systems.
- Familiar with NEC, NFPA, OSHA, building codes, industrial facility best practices.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee of granted asylum.
Desired
- Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil / Structural, Industrial Engineering, or related discipline.
- Experience with high-energy lasers, pulsed power systems, fusion, semiconductor, aerospace, nuclear, or similar technical facility environments.
- Experience creating or scaling a new engineering team, department, or technical function.
- Experience with contractors, architects, and vendors in major capital project delivery.
