Job Details

Our client is a well-established, college-preparatory private school serving students from Junior Kindergarten through 12th grade in South Florida. The school is seeking a Senior Accountant to join its Business Office and play an important role in maintaining accurate financial records, supporting monthly and annual close processes, and providing reliable financial information to school leadership.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys being hands-on, takes ownership of their work, and would like to bring their accounting expertise to a stable, mission-driven organization.

What You'll Do:
  • Manage and maintain accurate general ledger accounts and accounting records
  • Prepare and post journal entries and supporting documentation
  • Perform monthly bank and account reconciliations
  • Assist with month-end, quarter-end and year-end closing processes
  • Prepare and review monthly financial reports and statements
  • Analyze account activity and investigate discrepancies or unusual variances
  • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable functions as needed
  • Maintain schedules for prepaid expenses, fixed assets, accruals and other balance sheet accounts
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis
  • Support the annual audit and provide requested schedules and documentation
  • Assist with maintaining appropriate internal controls and accounting procedures
  • Help ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards and organizational policies
  • Work closely with the CFO and other members of the Business Office
  • Provide financial information and accounting support to school administration as needed
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting and efficiency
  • Handle confidential financial information with discretion and professionalism

What We're Looking For:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related field preferred
  • Approximately 4+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong general ledger and financial reporting experience
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and accounting principles
  • Experience with month-end close, journal entries and reconciliations
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines and work independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • High level of professionalism and discretion

Nice to Have:
  • Experience in a private school, independent school, nonprofit or other mission-driven organization
  • Nonprofit or fund accounting experience
  • Experience with tuition, restricted funds or grant accounting
  • Experience supporting an annual audit
  • ERP/accounting system experience
  • CPA or progress toward CPA

The Ideal Candidate:
The strongest candidate will be someone who is comfortable getting into the details while also understanding the bigger picture. You should enjoy owning your work, solving accounting issues rather than simply identifying them, and partnering with people outside of Finance.

Experience in a school or nonprofit environment is a plus, but we are also open to strong Senior Accountants coming from other industries who bring excellent technical accounting skills and the right personality for a collaborative educational environment.
