Job Summary
The scope of work for a respiratory therapist includes assessment, therapeutic intervention and education for patients with cardiopulmonary disorders and/or sleep disorders or associated complications. Primary Responsibilities for Pulmonary Function Lab RT
Perform diagnostic pulmonary function testing, including:
Spirometry
Diffusion testing
Lung volume testing
Airway resistance testing
Respiratory muscle force measurements
Bronchial provocation testing
Asthma exercise testing
Exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) testing
Cardiopulmonary stress testing
Home oxygen evaluations
Six-minute walk tests
Arterial blood gas (ABG) collection and analysis
Other physician-ordered respiratory diagnostic tests
Administer respiratory therapies as prescribed.
Educate patients on the proper use of respiratory medications and equipment.
Calibrate, clean, troubleshoot, and maintain pulmonary function testing equipment.
Identify and report equipment malfunctions to ensure accurate testing and patient safety.
Provide high-quality patient care while supporting physicians and the healthcare team in diagnosing and managing respiratory conditions.
Secondary Responsibilities
PFL Respiratory Therapists spend most of their time performing noncritical testing. However, they must be prepared to respond during an emergency, such as b
Qualifications
A degree in Respiratory Care from an accredited respiratory care program is required; minimum associate degree or equivalent as defined by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
Respiratory Therapists must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of all procedures, indications, contraindications and hazards involved in respiratory care, as well as knowledge of equipment utilized in their department. Demonstrates the ability and knowledge required to utilize computers for patient documentation and data gathering for quality care. Must complete orientations, competency validations, and other in-servicing as required by the department and hospital.
Must have current Respiratory Therapy licensure in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges as required by position.
Must have Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials as attained through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and maintain active status according to NBRC credentialing requirements.
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required. Must obtain site-specific specialty credential(s) such as Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), etc.
