Instrumentation Technician

The Surveying and Mapping Division provides project and geodetic surveying services for County departments. Project surveying includes boundary surveys, topographical surveys, right-of-way surveys, as-built surveys, construction stake-out, and sketches and descriptions of County owned property. We also support Public Works utilizing some of the latest GIS based applications for data collection and database updates. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Operates an electronic total station, electronic data collector, iron locator, level, and GPS equipment.
• Performs basic surveying calculations to determine points of elevation, locations of boundaries, and other reference points.
• Performs the duties of the Survey Party Chief in his or her absence.
• Determines horizontal and vertical angles.
• Cleans and cares for instruments and tools.
• Secures instruments and vehicles.
• Maintains full-time presence on the job.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
• A minimum of one (1) year of experience in land surveying, field surveying, or related technical work involving the operation of surveying instruments and equipment; or completion of a minimum one-year relevant apprenticeship or internship.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles -used while assigned to this position.
• Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills to serve others.
• Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
• Must be able to operate a computer.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

• Knowledge of field survey instrument operation and maintenance.
• Knowledge of land surveying principles, practices, techniques, and equipment.
• Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
• Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
• Skill in oral and written communication.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

• Working Conditions may include some exposure to environmental changes (e.g., outdoor weather and/or field conditions, warehouses, garages, etc.), extreme noises, odors, heights and/or dust.
• Physical Activity may include sitting, walking, lifting heavy objects up to 25lbs, kneeling, crouching, reaching, or standing.
