2027 Summer Internships - Engineering (Operations, Thermal, Transmission)

ABOUT THE PROGRAM – Summer 2027 Internship

As an intern at Invenergy, you will have the opportunity to: 

• Expand your knowledge and skills with industry leading tools and software while gaining hands-on professional experience 
• Engage with leaders throughout the organization and learn about the clean energy industry through weekly lunch-and-learns. 
• Visit our nearby power plants: Grand Ridge Energy Center and Nelson Energy Center 
• Spend a day giving back to the community with our ‘Volunteer Time Off’ program 
• Have lunch with our Founder and Executive Chairman of the Board, Michael Polsky 
• Attend various networking events put on by Invenergy  
• Explore Chicago with your fellow interns 
• Our program takes place from the end of May/early June – August lasting for 10-12 weeks 

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP 

Applicants will be considered for internships with various engineering departments across the organization. Our engineering interns are responsible for managing initiatives that support the technical design, evaluation, and construction of commercial and utility-scale projects. In the past, our engineering interns have joined teams such as: 

Transmission Engineering

• As an intern on the Transmission Engineering team, you will support the engineering and construction of cutting-edge long-distance transmission lines, HVDC lines and generation interconnection transmission facilities for renewable energy projects.
• Projects are located nationwide with various challenges that will provide you with opportunities to collaborate with experts in development, permitting, renewable engineering, construction, and operations.
• Transmission systems for these projects will utilize advanced technologies, focus on increasing the reach of low-cost renewable energy, and enhance grid reliability.

Operations Performance Engineering (Solar, Storage, and/or Wind)

• Analyze real-time operational data for active renewable power plants to find sources of equipment underperformance
• Support pilot projects to improve equipment reliability and/or improve tools and processes
• Work with large datasets to develop dashboards and analytics
• Work with cross-functional teams such as field technicians, quality, asset management, and procurement
• Support end-of-warranty inspections or maintenance evaluations
• Develop troubleshooting procedures
• Join a site visit

Thermal Engineering

• Apply engineering fundamentals to support evaluation, development, and execution of thermal energy projects
• Coordinate with project developers and engineers assigned to the project or a task and review work progress and results
• Gain knowledge of power generation technology and associated major equipment
• Assist in review of mechanical piping and instrument diagram (P&IDs) for power plant system including water treatment, fuel handling, heat transfer system, steam cycle system,
• Assist in review of performance estimates for major power plant related equipment including but not limited to combustion turbines, boilers, cooling towers, and pumps
• Assist in reviewing mechanical engineering designs, including layout and conceptual design

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

• Currently enrolled in a 4-year Bachelor’s degree program with an expected graduation date between Fall 2027 and Summer 2028. 
• Majoring in Engineering, including Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related engineering discipline. 
• Eligible to work in the United States without the need for employer visa sponsorship now or in the future. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

• A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above. 
• Demonstrated interest in the energy sector.

$22 - $27 Hourly

The base pay range reflects the minimum and maximum target salary for the position. Your recruiter can share more about the base pay for this internship opportunity during the hiring process.
