Durable Medical Equipment Specialist –Orthopedic Specialists of Petersburg
Job summary
The Durable Medical Equipment (DME) Specialist is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, and technical servicing of durable medical equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant operation. This role supports the full equipment lifecycle by diagnosing issues, performing repairs, and maintaining equipment readiness for use across care settings. The Specialist operates as a technical resource within the DME program and is accountable for equipment performance, functionality, and regulatory compliance.
Essential functions
Perform diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of durable medical equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications and internal standards.
Inspect equipment for safety, functionality, and performance, ensuring readiness for patient use.
Execute preventive maintenance activities, including testing, calibration, cleaning, and refurbishment of equipment.
Identify and resolve equipment malfunctions or performance issues, including determining when repair, replacement, or escalation is required.
Coordinate or facilitate vendor-supported repairs and servicing when specialized intervention is needed.
Maintain accurate records of equipment service history, maintenance activities, and repair outcomes within tracking systems.
Support the equipment lifecycle process, including evaluation, maintenance, and retirement of assets.
Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory, safety, and manufacturer requirements, including proper handling and servicing standards.
Monitor equipment condition and identify trends or recurring issues to support continuous improvement in equipment reliability and performance.
Collaborate with internal teams to support equipment availability and operational readiness, while maintaining clear boundaries from delivery, patient interaction, and workflow coordination responsibilities.
Maintain tools, workspaces, and technical resources required to perform equipment servicing and repair activities.
Participate in required training, certifications, and continuing education to maintain technical competency.

Education
High School diploma or equivalent (required)
Experience
Previous experience with durable medical equipment (preferred)
Skills and abilities
Hard/Tech/Clinical Skills:
Provide fitting, patient education on application, use, care, and expected outcome for products as indicated by the physician instructions and manufacturer recommendations.
Educate patients on insurance plans and provisions, financial responsibility, and collection of patient portions.
Ensure all necessary documentation and authorization is obtained as it relates to payer requirements.
Track, maintain, and order inventory for one or multiple locations.
Actively promote and foster excellent relations inter-departmentally and with external case managers, payers, suppliers, physician clinical staff and surgery personnel.
Ensure compliance is maintained by documenting custom measurements, ABN’s, MAE’s and LMN’s as needed.
Ability to work with a team of DMEPOS Coordinators and Billing Specialists.
Posts DME charges.
Train employees on DME process and procedures
Cleaning/stocking
Ensure blood borne pathogen, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements and other governmental regulations are adhered to.
