Job Summary

The PET CT Technologist/RN Coordinator is responsible for providing comprehensive clinical, diagnostic, and patient care services within the PET CT program. This role combines advanced PET CT imaging responsibilities with professional nursing assessment, patient education, care coordination, and oncology support services. The incumbent performs PET CT examinations, administers radiopharmaceuticals in accordance with regulatory standards, assesses patient readiness for procedures, reviews medical histories, laboratory results, and medications, and ensures optimal diagnostic outcomes. The position serves as a clinical resource for patients and families by providing education regarding PET CT procedures, oncology treatments, symptom management, and follow-up care.

The PET CT Technologist/RN Coordinator collaborates with physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to coordinate patient care across the continuum, ensuring safe, efficient, and patient-centered services. The role maintains compliance with regulatory, accreditation, radiation safety, and quality standards; manages department supplies and radionuclide inventory; participates in quality improvement initiatives; and responds appropriately to emergency situations. The incumbent demonstrates expertise in both diagnostic imaging and nursing practice while promoting exceptional patient experience, clinical excellence, and operational effectiveness.

  PET CT Imaging Responsibilities
  
  • Performs PET CT examinations in accordance with established departmental protocols and physician orders.
  • Prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic imaging in compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
  • Operates PET CT imaging equipment to obtain high-quality diagnostic images and ensures accurate image acquisition and processing.
  • Positions, monitors, and supports patients to achieve optimal image quality while ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Utilizes radiation safety principles and actively participates in radiation exposure reduction for patients, staff, and the public.
  • Performs and documents quality assurance activities and maintains compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements.
  • Participates in accrediting agency, regulatory, and departmental inspections.
  • Maintains responsibility for inventory management and ordering of radionuclides, supplies, and related materials.
  
  Clinical Nursing and Assessment Responsibilities
  
  • Assesses patients' physical, emotional, and psychosocial status, health history, medications, and readiness for PET CT procedures.
  • Reviews laboratory results, pathology findings, imaging studies, and medication histories to identify issues impacting patient care or diagnostic outcomes.
  • Monitors and documents patient vital signs and clinical status before, during, and after procedures as appropriate.
  • Recognizes changes in patient condition, responds appropriately to emergencies, and initiates hospital emergency protocols when indicated.
  • Assesses patient and family understanding of disease processes, diagnostic testing, and treatment plans.
  
  Patient Education and Care Coordination
  
  • Provides education to patients and families regarding PET CT preparation, imaging procedures, oncology treatments, side effect management, and follow-up care.
  • Conducts pre-procedure patient outreach to verify exam readiness and reinforce preparation instructions.
  • Coordinates care among physicians, nursing staff, oncology services, imaging services, and other multidisciplinary team members.
  • Communicates patient needs and clinical concerns to appropriate healthcare team members and facilitates timely interventions.
  • Assists patients and families in accessing supportive care resources and educational services.
  • Coordinates prescription refills, prior authorizations, medical necessity documentation, and communication of diagnostic testing results when appropriate.

  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record.
  • Completes all required regulatory, clinical, and departmental documentation in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Participates in departmental quality improvement, patient safety, employee engagement, and operational initiatives.
  • Maintains compliance with Joint Commission standards, NYSDOH regulations, National Patient Safety Goals, infection prevention practices, medication management requirements, and radiation safety standards
  • Assists with departmental orientation, competency validation, and educational activities as assigned.
