Full job description
The Certified Medical Assistant / Registered Medical Assistant performs routine administrative and patient care support duties in a medical practice to assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensures that the office runs smoothly.
Qualifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) - American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) - American Allied Health (AAH)
- Certified Medical Assistant (NCCT) - National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
- Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) - American Medical Technologists (AMT)
- Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) - National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
- Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) - National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
- Education: H.S. Diploma/GED
Responsibilities
- Room patients and collect information on chief complaint, family history, social history, surgical history, and medication reconciliation.
- Complete telephone communications with patients, families, pharmacies, and healthcare facilities.
- Gather and maintain patient information via telephone according to department policies and procedures.
- Perform patient check-in and check-out.
- Complete prior authorizations for medications and procedures.
- Schedule appointments and verify insurance benefits.
- Coordinate referrals and diagnostic testing.
- Perform office procedures and department-specific duties.
- Assist with urine catheterizations, bladder scanning, suture/staple removal, and cast application/removal as directed by a provider.
- Read negative TB skin test results and escalate potential positive results to nursing staff.
- Perform point-of-care diagnostic testing.
- Provide patients with written instructions regarding procedures, medications, and follow-up care.
- Provide condition-specific patient education materials as directed by providers.
- Administer medications per provider orders.
- Assist with prescription medication refills according to department protocols.
- Call prescriptions into pharmacies and notify patients of refills.
- Document patient interactions and medication actions in the EMR.
- Maintain competencies related to point-of-care testing, equipment handling, and specialty training.
- Obtain and document height, weight, blood pressure, respiratory rate, pulse, pain level, and medication reviews.
- Clean and stock exam rooms and supply areas.
- Order and maintain department supplies.
- Maintain patient and provider schedule flow.
- Serve as a preceptor and resource for Medical Assistant staff.
- Maintain par levels of supplies in exam rooms.
- Track and monitor supply and medication expiration dates.
- Assist with Certificates of Medical Necessity.
- Call patients with normal laboratory results.

Compensation and Benefits
The compensation range for this position is $18.33per hour - $29.69per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
