Job Summary

The Patient Care Associate is responsible for performing assigned patient care tasks under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The PCA assists with patient care as delegated by the RN and in according to hospital policies and procedures. The PCA carries out various clinical responsibilities as well as documentation of tasks and supports and upholds the Patient Bill of Rights. In certain areas of assignment and after competence is established the PCA III performs the duties of a Monitor Technician.

Essential Functions

  • JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:

    Demonstrates the required job specific technical/professional knowledge, skills and abilities *

    1. Performs direct nursing tasks including taking vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living and assisting with
    personal hygiene needs.

    2. Collects data and charts observations and activities, reporting pertinent changes in the patient’s condition to the
    Registered Nurse. Documents vital signs, heights, weights, and other measurements. Assists and documents
    nutritional intake and fluid intake and output.

    3. Assists patients with their nutritional needs, checks sets up delivered food trays, assists with feeding the patient if
    necessary, and refills water and ice. Assists patients with their mobility, turning and positioning, transferring
    patients to and from wheelchair, and with ambulation.

    4. Performs phlebotomy via venous puncture. Obtains certain lab specimens. Performs EKG and reports EKG
    computer results to the RN. Performs finger stick blood glucose testing, documents and reports results to the RN.

    5. Complies with hospital safety regulations, environment of care, risk management, and infection control policies.
    Assists in maintaining and providing a clean, safe environment.

    6. Performs delegated or other specialized functions as educationally prepared. May handle patient medications for
    transport and retrieval purposes only.

Qualifications

  • High School Required or
  • GED Required
  • less than 1 year Previous Health Care experience required. Required and
  • Certified Nurse’s Assistant, Certified Patient Care Technician, or currently enrolled in a nursing program highly preferred. Preferred and
  • Demonstrated experience and competence in Phlebotomy and EKG preferred. Preferred and
  • Monitor Technician experience preferred when it is as applicable for area of assignment. Preferred and
  • Full command of English Language.
  • Sufficient physical ability and perceptive acuity to perform patient care functions.
  • PCA I:

    Satisfactory completion of PCA Orientation and Skills Competency
    Checklist within the first three (3) months of employment. EKG &
    Phlebotomy skills. Blood Glucose Monitor skills.


    PCA II:

    Satisfactory performance appraisal, 1 year experience as a PCA at
    Montefiore Nyack Hospital.


    PCA III:

    A:
    In addition to all of the above
    Must meet one (1) of the following:
    ▪ National certification in phlebotomy
    ▪ Attendance at a Preceptor training course
    ▪ Completion of Dysrhythmia Course
    Or
    B:
    • PCA assigned to TCU; Requirement of NYS CNA Certification


    PCA IV:

    In addition to all of the above,
    • 2 years’ experience at Montefiore Nyack Hospital as PCA,
    • Above average performance appraisal (2.35+)
    • Precept at least 2 Patient Care Associates after attending a
    preceptor training course
  • BLS Certification- American Heart Association within 30 Days Required
