Duties
- Performs complex trouble-shooting, repairs, overhaul, modification, and servicing of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration units.
- Operates, adjusts, and repairs HVAC systems controlled by computer based systems (e.g., direct digital, microprocessor, electro-pneumatic, electronic and automated logic systems).
- Inspects equipment to detect damage, pressure leaks, corrective voltage, and amperes on all equipment
- Upgrades, programs, and installs HVAC programs for control systems and repairs Direct Drive Controllers (DDC) and Variable Air Volume Controllers (VAV).
- Refers to work orders, blueprints, sketches, manufacturer's publications, and technical manuals to assist in installing large units, up to approximately 200 tons.
- Utilizes computer-based software programs and systems (e.g., Honeywell Building Supervisor, Computer Aided Regulation Engineering (CARE), Johnson Metasys, XI584, HVAC Project Facilities Maintenance, Back Talk, etc.) to assist with completing work.
- Services and repairs compressors, air handling units, condensers, water towers, evaporators, chillers, valves, dehumidification units, and mechanical ventilating equipment.

- Licenses/Certifications: Must possess a valid state driver's license and be capable of obtaining and maintaining a government license for operating government vehicles from ½ ton pickup to 1½ ton trucks.
Qualifications
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.
The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is:
- Performs the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as installing, repairing, maintaining, overhauling, and servicing of HVAC systems; providing assistance with complex tasks and projects.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Effort: The incumbent frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment's that weigh up to 50 pounds. Work requires walking, standing, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Work is frequently performed in hard-to-reach places; therefore, stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are often for long periods.
Working Conditions: Work is normally performed inside a well-lighted, fairly clean enclosed area. The incumbent is subject to hazards of fumes, gases, electrical shocks and explosions, burn from torches, motors and steam, fiberglass, spun glass, grease, oils and dust. The incumbent may be subject to hazards of cold weather, abnormal heat, and working in cramped quarters. Works outside on top of tall buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Wears face masks and protective clothing when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants.

Drug-Free Workplace Policy
The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is committed to maintaining a safe, drug-free workplace. All DLA employees are required to refrain from illegal drug use on and off duty. DLA conducts pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and random drug testing.
Applicants tentatively selected for employment in testing designated positions will undergo a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Refusal to undergo testing or testing positive for illegal drugs will result in withdrawal of the tentative job offer and a six-month denial of employment with DLA from the date of the drug test. Employees in drug testing designated positions are subject to random drug testing.
The DLA drug testing panel tests for the following substances: marijuana, cocaine, opiates, heroin, phencyclidine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, fentanyl, nor fentanyl, methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), and opioids.
ADVISORY: Use of cannabidiol (CBD) products may result in a positive drug test for marijuana. DLA employees are subject to Federal law and under Federal law, Marijuana is a Schedule I drug and is illegal.
