Job Details
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and oversee the organization’s operating tax function across the U.S. and Canada.
- Manage sales and use tax compliance, reporting, audits, registrations, and related tax matters across applicable jurisdictions.
- Oversee property tax compliance, filings, assessments, abatements, appeals, and related matters.
- Manage business license requirements, registrations, renewals, compliance, and related reporting.
- Identify, evaluate, and manage tax credits and incentives, including opportunities associated with business operations, expansion, investment, and other qualifying activities.
- Leverage technology, automation, and data analytics to improve tax compliance, reporting, accuracy, and efficiency.
- Evaluate and implement tax technology, systems, and tools that support a scalable operating tax function.
- Partner with IT, Finance, Accounting, and Operations to improve the flow, quality, and accessibility of tax-related data.
- Monitor changes in tax legislation and regulatory requirements across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico and assess their impact on the organization.
- Provide tax guidance related to new locations, business initiatives, transactions, contracts, and operational changes.
- Develop and maintain effective tax policies, procedures, controls, and processes.
- Identify opportunities to improve tax efficiency while ensuring compliance and managing risk.
- Oversee relationships with external tax advisors, consultants, auditors, and taxing authorities.
- Manage tax audits, notices, inquiries, assessments, and disputes.
- Establish and improve processes and systems to ensure accurate and timely tax reporting and compliance.
- Develop meaningful tax reporting and dashboards to provide visibility into compliance, liabilities, opportunities, and key performance indicators.
- Support tax planning, forecasting, budgeting, and other strategic initiatives.
- Stay current on legislative, regulatory, and technology developments affecting operating taxes.
- Lead, develop, and mentor tax professionals and contribute to the continued development of the tax function.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field.
- CPA, MST, or other relevant tax credential preferred.
- 8+ years of progressive tax experience with significant experience in sales and use tax, property tax, business licenses, and tax credits and incentives.
- Experience overseeing tax matters across multiple jurisdictions
- Strong understanding of multi-state and local tax requirements.
- Experience in logistics, transportation, trucking, distribution, or a similar multi-state, asset-intensive industry is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to leverage technology, automation, data analytics, and tax systems to improve processes and outcomes.
- Experience implementing, optimizing, or working extensively with tax technology and/or ERP systems.
- Strong Excel and data analysis skills, with the ability to work with large and complex datasets.
- Experience managing tax audits, assessments, notices, and relationships with taxing authorities.
- Demonstrated experience identifying and maximizing applicable tax credits and incentives.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple jurisdictions and priorities.
- Ability to communicate complex tax matters clearly to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
- Strong business judgment and the ability to partner effectively with senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
- Experience managing external tax advisors and/or developing tax processes and teams.
