Full job description

At Layup Parts, we're developing the technology that will build the future.

We're a manufacturing technology company replacing months of lead time with days, using proprietary software, automation, and advanced manufacturing systems built for speed. Our customers are inventing what's next, in aerospace, defense, robotics, and beyond. To keep up with them, manufacturing has to change. That's what we're building.

We're hiring our first dedicated Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) Manager to own EH&S at Layup. Our shop runs prepreg layup, autoclave and oven cure, large-format 3D printing, 5-axis machining of composites and tooling, bonding, and finishing, all at prototype speed.

This is a hands-on, technical role. You'll dig into how our processes actually work, find where the real risk is, and build the safety programs, air permits, and waste systems that fit a fast-moving shop. There's no big team or rulebook waiting for you. You'll build it, earn buy-in from the people on the floor, and keep us compliant with Cal/OSHA, SCAQMD, and state and federal environmental rules as we grow.

We're looking for a builder and a partner, not a hall monitor. The right person focuses on what can actually hurt someone or shut us down, and right-sizes everything else.

What You'll Do

  • Own the EH&S program: build it, run it, and keep improving it as the company scales
  • Get into the details of our processes (prepreg layup, cure, machining, 3D printing, bonding, finishing) and lead hazard analyses, JHAs, and risk assessments for new and changing equipment, materials, and processes before they hit the floor
  • Design practical controls for carbon fiber and composite dust, resin and solvent exposure, and other industrial hygiene risks, including dust collection, ventilation, exposure monitoring, and PPE
  • Support air quality compliance with AQMD by providing the underlying data our permits require, such as VOC and particulate emissions, material usage, and monitoring results. Handle all required recordkeeping and reporting and maintain a working knowledge of applicable air regulations.
  • Stand up and maintain our hazardous waste program: characterize waste streams (uncured prepreg, resins, adhesives, solvents, contaminated consumables), manage accumulation, labeling, and storage, coordinate vendors and manifests, and meet EPA, DTSC, and local CUPA requirements
  • Build and run the safety programs that matter for our shop, including IIPP, Hazard Communication, LOTO, machine guarding, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, forklift and crane safety, heat illness prevention, emergency response, and workplace violence prevention
  • Own Cal/OSHA recordkeeping and compliance paperwork (300, 300A, and 301 logs, training records, written programs, inspections) so we're audit ready at all times
  • Support product compliance for REACH, RoHS, and California Proposition 65, including material declarations, supplier data, and customer requests
  • Lead incident and near miss investigations with real root cause analysis, and drive corrective actions to closure
  • Train our team and build safety into how work actually gets done, partnering with technicians, engineers, and leadership so programs get adopted, not just written
  • Serve as our primary point of contact for regulators, auditors, insurers, and customer EH&S requests

  • What We're Looking For

  • Be awesome! Be the kind of person you want to work with!
  • 5+ years of hands-on EH&S experience in manufacturing, ideally composites, aerospace, or another environment with chemicals, dust, and heavy equipment
  • A technical background (degree in engineering, chemistry, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or a related field, or equivalent experience) and the curiosity to understand our processes down to the details
  • Working knowledge of Cal/OSHA (Title 8) and federal OSHA (29 CFR 1910) requirements
  • Experience with air permitting and compliance, ideally with SCAQMD or another California air district
  • Hands-on experience running hazardous waste programs, including characterization, accumulation, manifests, and generator requirements under RCRA and California DTSC rules
  • A track record of standing up real safety programs from scratch and maintaining the documentation that keeps a site compliant
  • Familiarity with REACH, RoHS, and Prop 65, or the ability to get up to speed quickly
  • A partnership mindset: you get results by earning buy-in from the people doing the work, not by policing them
  • Good judgment about priorities: you focus on the risks that can seriously hurt people or the business, and right-size everything else
  • Comfort moving fast with imperfect information and building lean, practical systems that fit a startup instead of copying a big-company playbook

  • Bonus Points

  • Experience with prepreg composites, autoclaves, or controlling carbon fiber machining dust
  • Experience setting up EH&S at a startup or a new, rapidly growing facility
  • Industrial hygiene sampling and exposure assessment experience
  • Professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, CHMM, or ASP
  • Experience supporting aerospace and defense customer EH&S audits or flow-down requirements
  • Experience with EH&S software, or building simple digital tools to replace paper-based processes

  • Equal Opportunity

Layup is an equal-opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will be treated with respect and receive equal consideration for employment without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, uniform service, Veteran status, age, or any other protected characteristic per federal, state, or local law, including those with a criminal history, in a manner consistent with the requirements of applicable state and local laws, including the CA Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring Ordinance.

    ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
