Medical Assistant

Support quality patient care and efficient clinical operations at the Student Health Center while helping coordinate providers, student employees, patient services, and essential back-office processes.


Position Summary

The Medical Assistant supports safe, efficient clinical and business operations within the nursing area and facilitates communication across the Student Health Center and with campus departments. This position manages and coordinates six provider schedules, along with Lab and Pharmacy schedules, provides delegated patient-care support within documented competency and applicable protocols and law, coordinates referrals and insurance prior authorizations, and supervises 10–15 Clinician Aide student employees and two Public Health student employees.

The Medical Assistant also provides continuity and quality control for a high-turnover student workforce by hiring, training, mentoring, tracking competencies, and providing day-to-day supervision. The position performs back-office procedures and completes assignments from nurses and providers while maintaining a professional manner and following Church and University standards.


What You’ll Do

  • Interview, hire, train, mentor, and provide day-to-day supervision for 10–15 Clinician Aide student employees and two Public Health student employees per semester.
  • Maintain a standardized, competency-based training process using observation, supervised practice, return demonstration/teach-back, and documented completion of required competencies.
  • Work with the Student Area Director and Clinician Aide Student Supervisor to ensure student employees receive current procedures, training, performance expectations, coaching, and updates.
  • Review student performance, address quality concerns, and direct disciplinary action as appropriate within University and Student Health Center processes.
  • Oversee Clinician Aide scheduling and coordinate staffing to support patient demand and safe clinic operations.
  • Manage and facilitate six provider schedules, as well as Lab and Pharmacy schedules, including routine adjustments and exception management.
  • Provide delegated clinical support within documented competency, Student Health Center protocols, and applicable law. Duties may include patient rooming, obtaining and documenting vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, assisting licensed clinicians with procedures, specimen collection and testing, EKGs, wound care and dressing changes, and injections or immunizations when appropriately authorized.
  • Support licensed nurses with in-person and telephone triage workflows by collecting and communicating information according to established protocols. Clinical assessment, diagnosis, and independent triage remain with licensed clinicians.
  • Process and track patient referrals and insurance prior authorizations, coordinate follow-up, and escalate exceptions or clinical questions to the appropriate licensed clinician.
  • Answer calls requiring medical-office knowledge, assist with patient flow, and communicate professionally with patients, clinicians, campus departments, and outside healthcare organizations.
  • Monitor refrigerator temperatures daily and follow established procedures for excursions or concerns.
  • Maintain patient-room readiness, including restocking supplies and supporting safe, efficient turnover.
  • Sort, route, and prepare documents for scanning and accurate medical-record maintenance.
  • Maintain and update knowledge-base and training tools used by Student Health Center staff and student employees.
  • Assist with the patient isotretinoin (Accutane) process as assigned.
  • Participate in applicable weekly, monthly, and management meetings, including meetings with nurses and the Lab Manager, Public Health meetings, Clinician Aide Management meetings, and Professional Staff Meetings.
  • Assist with interviewing and hiring designated professional staff and coordinate hiring support for the Lab as assigned.
  • Perform weekly and monthly autoclave maintenance according to established procedures.
  • Maintain biohazard waste containers and related supplies in accordance with Student Health Center procedures.
  • Complete additional duties assigned within the scope of the position, training, and applicable policies.
  • Work effectively as part of a team and support a culture of service, accountability, and patient safety.
  • Promote a positive image of the Student Health Center and the University while maintaining constructive working relationships with University employees, students, patients, and external partners.
