Full job description
At Layup Parts, we're developing the technology that will build the future.
We're a manufacturing technology company replacing months of lead time with days, using proprietary software, automation, and advanced manufacturing systems built for speed. Our customers are inventing what's next, in aerospace, defense, robotics, and beyond. To keep up with them, manufacturing has to change. That's what we're building.
We design, machine, print, and build faster than anyone else in the industry and we’re looking for a Metrology Technicianwho’s passionate about precision, engineering, and modern manufacturing. This is a hands-on technical role combining advanced dimensional inspection, 3D scanning, engineering drawing interpretation, and quality systems support. You’ll learn to turn complex engineering requirements into reliable inspection methods and clear, actionable inspection data while helping Layup Parts maintain and continuously improve its AS9100 Quality Management System.
What You’ll Do:
Perform dimensional inspection of composite, machined, and assembled parts using 3D scanning systems and traditional measuring equipment
Learn and operate the SCANTECH NimbleTrack 3D scanning system to collect accurate dimensional data
Build PolyWorks inspection projects from scratch, including importing CAD models, establishing alignments, creating measured features, defining characteristics, and generating inspection reports
Translate engineering drawing Critical to Quality (CTQ) requirements into effective inspection methods within PolyWorks
Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) when developing and performing inspections
Understand and appropriately apply datum-based alignments, best-fit alignments, and other part alignment strategies
Develop inspection methods that allow features and characteristics to be extracted reliably and efficiently from 3D scan data
Create clear, repeatable, and easy-to-understand inspection reports for internal teams and external customers
Review engineering drawings, CAD models, work instructions, and customer requirements to determine appropriate inspection methods
Perform First Article Inspections and support completion of AS9102 inspection documentation
Use calipers, micrometers, height gages, pin gages, and other conventional inspection equipment when appropriate
Enter and maintain inspection data within our MES (Matrix) and help improve digital quality and inspection workflows
Support investigations of nonconforming product, rework, corrective actions, and other quality issues
Understand and support Measurement System Analysis (MSA) activities, including Gage R&R studies
Understand the fundamentals behind Statistical Process Control (SPC) and use inspection data to help identify process trends and opportunities for improvement
Support maintenance and improvement of the Layup Parts AS9100 Quality Management System
Assist with document control and controlled-document revisions
Maintain calibration records and support calibration tracking activities
Assist with employee training records and training matrix upkeep
Develop and maintain Excel-based inspection templates and quality records
Track and follow up on Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPAs), Opportunities for Improvement (OFIs), and other quality-system actions
Support basic internal auditing and collection of objective evidence for AS9100 compliance
Collaborate with Quality, Engineering, Production, and Software teams to improve inspection methods, product quality, and manufacturing processes
Perform Quality Inspector responsibilities, including receiving inspection, in-process inspection, final inspection, nonconformance documentation, and other inspection activities as needed
As Layup Parts’ metrology capabilities expand, potentially learn basic ZEISS CMM programming and operation using CALYPSO
What We’re Looking For:
Be awesome! Be the kind of person you want to work with!
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field
Recent engineering graduates with strong technical aptitude and hands-on interests are encouraged to apply
Experience working with 3D CAD software and the ability to navigate and interpret 3D models
Comfortable reading engineering drawings and learning to apply GD&T
Strong spatial reasoning and an ability to understand how engineering requirements relate to physical parts and measurement data
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
High attention to detail and a strong standard for precision, repeatability, and data integrity
Comfortable learning technically complex software and developing repeatable workflows
Able to clearly document technical findings and communicate inspection results to engineering, production, customers, and other stakeholders
Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications
Comfortable working independently while also collaborating closely with engineering and production teams
Eagerness to learn both advanced metrology and aerospace quality-system requirements
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, hands-on production environment
Willing and able to perform traditional hands-on inspection activities in addition to computer-based metrology work
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted
Lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying
Bonus Points:
Experience with PolyWorks Inspector, although prior PolyWorks experience is not required
Experience with 3D scanning, structured-light scanning, photogrammetry, laser scanning, or other portable metrology equipment
Experience creating inspection plans from engineering drawings
Familiarity with datum reference frames, best-fit alignment, surface profile, position, runout, and other common GD&T controls
Experience with aerospace, composites, machining, or other precision manufacturing environments
Familiarity withAS9100, AS9102, or ISO 9001
Understanding of Gage R&R, Measurement System Analysis, SPC, process capability, or basic engineering statistics
Experience with First Article Inspections
Experience with MES, ERP, PLM, or QMS platforms
Advanced Microsoft Excel experience
Exposure to CMM programming or operation, particularly ZEISS CALYPSO
Previous internship, co-op, laboratory, Formula SAE, aerospace club, manufacturing, machining, inspection, or other hands-on engineering experience
Why Layup Parts?
