Position Title:

Director of Academics & Student Athlete Development

Job Description:

The Director of Academics and Student-Athlete Development leads academic support and student-development services for the University’s Division I student-athletes. Reporting directly to the Deputy Director of Athletics, with a dual reporting relationship to the Associate Provost’s Office, the director collaborates with the Center for Student Success and the Executive Director of Advising to monitor academic progress, coordinate support services, promote student-athlete development, and support NCAA academic reporting and compliance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and oversee the academic progress of approximately 700 student-athletes participating in 26 Division I sports, and assign teams to the Assistant Director of Academics and Student-Athlete Support and the Graduate Assistant for Student-Athlete Support Services in support of departmental academic goals.
  • Provide direct academic support to assigned varsity sports, including men’s rugby, cheerleading, and dance.
  • Meet individually with assigned student-athletes and facilitate communication between student-athletes and faculty members when appropriate.
  • Coordinate and recommend academic and personal support services for student-athletes, including tutoring, learning services, counseling, and academic support courses.
  • Collaborate with campus departments, including the Career Center, Office of Service, Student Life, and Counseling Services, on student-athlete development initiatives.
  • Use the Sports Tracking Calendar in conjunction with team travel schedules to coordinate class-dismissal notifications and issue team travel letters before each competitive season.
  • Plan and coordinate student-athlete programs and events, including the Student-Athlete Leadership Retreat, Student-Athlete Kickoff, Title IX training, guest speakers, community service activities, and the Emmits Awards Show.
  • Serve as advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and collaborate with the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on student-athlete initiatives.
  • Assist the Office of Compliance with the collection, validation, and submission of data required for NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) reports, as directed by the Director of Compliance and the Deputy Director of Athletics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  


Job Requirements: Education, Experience and Skills:

  • Knowledge of NCAA rules, regulations, and academic standards applicable to student-athletes.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, complete work accurately and on time, and work independently with sound judgment.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across the University.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teamwork, student success, confidentiality, and professional service.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Two to five years of relevant experience in higher education, intercollegiate athletics, academic advising, student support, or a related field preferred.

Physical and Scheduling Requirements

  • Ability to work at a computer and communicate with students, faculty, staff, and external partners for extended periods.
  • Ability to move between campus offices and athletic facilities.
  • Ability to work evenings or weekends in support of student-athlete programs, events, and operational needs.

Salary/Benefits:

$50,000 - $55,000/year

(Actual compensation will be commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications).
