Head of Environmental
APM Terminals Pier 400 is seeking an experienced environmental leader to drive the terminal's environmental strategy, regulatory compliance programs, sustainability initiatives, and long-term environmental performance.
This role serves as the terminal's senior environmental expert, partnering with terminal leadership, corporate stakeholders, regulatory agencies, customers, and community representatives to ensure compliance, mitigate risk, and advance environmental stewardship across the business.
The successful candidate will bring a strategic mindset, strong leadership capabilities, and deep expertise in environmental compliance within a large and complex operational environment.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute the terminal's environmental strategy aligned with business objectives and sustainability commitments
- Serve as a trusted advisor to terminal leadership on environmental risks, compliance obligations, and strategic priorities
- Establish environmental goals, performance metrics, and continuous improvement plans
- Champion a culture of environmental responsibility and accountability
Environmental Compliance & Governance
- Lead the Environmental Management System (ISO 14001)
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, Port of Los Angeles, and corporate environmental requirements
- Oversee environmental audits, inspections, reporting activities, permit management, and corrective actions
- Monitor regulatory developments and evaluate potential business impacts
Sustainability & Operational Integration
- Lead initiatives focused on emissions reduction, waste minimization, resource conservation, and sustainability performance
- Partner with operational and engineering teams to integrate environmental requirements into projects and daily operations
- Support terminal electrification, decarbonization, and other transformational sustainability initiatives
Stakeholder Management
- Build strong relationships with regulatory agencies, customers, industry organizations, contractors, and community stakeholders
- Represent the terminal during inspections, audits, permitting activities, and industry forums
- Collaborate across APM Terminals and Maersk to share best practices and drive environmental excellence
Risk Management & Emergency Response
- Identify environmental risks and implement effective mitigation strategies
- Lead environmental incident investigations, corrective actions, and regulatory notifications
- Maintain and continuously improve environmental emergency response programs
- Provide leadership support during environmental incidents and operational disruptions
People Leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing environmental team
- Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Build technical capability and succession strength within the organization

What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, or a related field
- 10+ years of environmental leadership experience in a complex industrial, logistics, transportation, manufacturing, energy, or port environment
- Strong knowledge of environmental compliance programs, regulatory requirements, and ISO 14001 management systems
- Experience developing and implementing environmental strategies and sustainability programs
- Proven ability to influence senior leaders and drive cross-functional initiatives
- Experience managing environmental audits, inspections, permits, and regulatory reporting
- Strong stakeholder management and relationship-building capabilities
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership skills

Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant discipline
- Professional environmental certifications

Working Environment
This role is based 100% onsite at APM Terminals Pier 400 in Los Angeles. The position requires regular interaction with active port operations, heavy equipment, contractors, regulatory agencies, and terminal leadership teams. Flexibility to support environmental incidents, audits, inspections, and business-critical activities outside normal working hours may be required.
Salary: $140K - $175K
Location: Los Angeles, CA
