Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
Responsibilities:
GENERAL PURPOSE:Provides technical knowledge in preparing instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical procedures and assists the surgical team from the scrub position during an operation. Responsible for proper care and handling of instruments and facilitating room turnover between cases. Maintains sterile technique, safe handling of sharps, and performance of surgical counts as per hospital policy. Demonstrates proper handling of solutions and pharmacologic agents under the direction of a registered nurse. Serves as a patient advocate. Functions as a preceptor to staff and students orienting to the operating room scrub position. This role works in the outpatient surgical center setting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assists the surgical team by anticipating instrument/equipment requirements during the surgical procedure, based on knowledge of the procedure and changes that occur throughout the procedure. Procures urgently requested instruments, equipment, and supplies, including surgical implants for individual operating rooms.
Selects required instruments, equipment and supplies for procedures based on surgeon's preference cards adapted for specific procedures and individual patients.
Applies principles of aseptic technique theories to instrument/equipment preparation and maintenance and when assisting with surgical procedures. Identifies any potential compromise to the sterile integrity of items throughout the preoperative experience. Identifies sterility/surgical problems and collaborates in developing a plan of care based on best practice standards and surgical case goals. Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, prepares intraoperative pharmacological solutions to be utilized during surgical procedures.
Assists in preparing patients for sedation and local procedures. Supports age-specific, culturally, and spiritually competent interventions to address patient/family needs and response to procedures, therapies, and medications. Recognizes changes in patient status and responds effectively. Communicates change in patient status to appropriate members of the healthcare team. Facilitates room turnover between cases.
Assembles, tests, and ensures correct working order of all instruments and equipment prior to and during procedures. Identifies defective or malfunctioning parts, disassembles and tags appropriately for repair.
Assists with the collection of data to support unit performance improvement activities. Engaged in the Shared Governance process (unit, service, organization).
Assists with maintaining inventory as needed.
May serve as a secondary preceptor to staff and students orienting to the operating room scrub position.
Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Graduate of an accredited (CAAHEP) ST program, -or- Completion of an American Military ST program, -or- one year experience as a ST between the dates January 2011 and January 2015 required
Or equivalent combination of education and experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
If hired after January 1, 2015: Certification by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) as a Tech in Surgery required or Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) as a certified Surgical Technologist upon hire required
Certification Exception: Not required for ST with above one year experience as a ST between the dates January 2011 and January 2015 upon hire required
