About the Role

As a Middle School Science & STEM Teacher at Van Avery Prep, you will inspire students to explore the natural and designed world through rigorous, hands-on learning. You will create an engaging, structured classroom and laboratory environment where students strengthen scientific reasoning, curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and confidence as problem-solvers.

In this role, you will design and deliver differentiated, standards-aligned instruction that deepens students’ scientific knowledge and strengthens their ability to investigate, analyze, design, and communicate. Through laboratory investigations, collaborative problem-solving, engineering design challenges, and meaningful projects, you will help students connect classroom learning to authentic questions and real-world applications.

You Will…

  • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned science instruction for middle school students, with learning experiences spanning the life, physical, earth, and environmental sciences as appropriate to assigned courses
  • Create hands-on STEM experiences that integrate scientific inquiry, engineering design, technology, mathematics, and collaborative problem-solving
  • Facilitate laboratory investigations and demonstrations that develop students’ skills in observation, measurement, data collection, analysis, evidence-based reasoning, and scientific communication
  • Use inquiry-based instruction, design challenges, and project-based learning to help students apply scientific concepts to authentic questions and real-world problems
  • Differentiate instruction, materials, and support to meet varying academic needs, learning styles, and levels of readiness
  • Establish clear classroom and laboratory routines and maintain a safe, inclusive, and academically purposeful learning environment
  • Assess student progress through formative and summative measures, maintain accurate records, provide constructive feedback, and adjust instruction based on learning needs
  • Communicate consistently with families regarding student progress, classroom expectations, accomplishments, and areas for continued growth
  • Collaborate with fellow teachers, specialists, and school leadership to support interdisciplinary learning and a cohesive student experience
  • Maintain organized classroom and laboratory spaces, supervise students responsibly, manage instructional materials and equipment, and follow all school policies and health and safety procedures

What We Are Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Science Education, Engineering, Technology, Mathematics, Education, or a related field from an accredited institution
  • California teaching credential preferred
  • Prior experience teaching middle school science or STEM courses preferred
  • Strong knowledge of scientific inquiry, laboratory practices, engineering design, project-based learning, and developmentally appropriate middle school instruction
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and support students with varying academic needs and levels of readiness
  • Strong classroom and laboratory management, communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build positive relationships and communicate effectively with students, families, colleagues, and school leadership
  • Commitment to creating an inclusive, academically rigorous learning environment that fosters curiosity, perseverance, collaboration, and responsible innovation
  • Ability to pass a state and federal background check
