The Engineering Manager is the operating resource leader for Tesco Engineering. The position ensures that the right technical capability is assigned to the right project at the right time, continuously balances engineering demand and capacity, and resolves cross-project resource constraints in close coordination with Project Management. After resource leadership, the Engineering Manager is expected to remain a senior technical contributor who performs substantive engineering work on projects in areas of personal strength.
This is intentionally not a traditional people-management position. Routine administrative supervision is limited to what is required for line accountability, performance documentation, capability assessment, and identification of development needs. Project Managers direct the engineers’ daily project tasks and schedule; technical SMEs provide project-specific technical leadership; the Engineering Manager keeps the resource system healthy and contributes technically.
This role will also be on site in our Sacramento office and will require travel up to 10% of the time.
What you will do:
Maintain a rolling view of engineering demand, available capacity, capability, and key project milestones across panel design, PLC, SCADA/HMI, networking/telemetry, FAT, and commissioning.Meet closely and frequently with Project Managers to assign resources, anticipate shortages, rebalance workloads, resolve conflicts, and support schedule recovery.Assign engineers based on demonstrated capability, development needs, project risk, and business priorities rather than historical department boundaries.Serve as a senior technical contributor on selected projects; perform engineering, technical review, troubleshooting, estimating support, FAT, or commissioning in areas of expertise.Assess engineering capability and identify targeted training, mentoring, recruiting, and succession needs.Support development of a broad Automation Engineer workforce in which panel design is foundational and PLC, SCADA, networking, telemetry, testing, and commissioning skills overlap.Partner with Manufacturing Engineering to ensure engineered panels are manufacturable and production-ready before customer submittal and release.Support CTMO/Engineering Fellow matrix initiatives without creating a permanent parallel hierarchy.Use project performance, estimated-to-complete labor, rework, quality, and schedule data to improve future resource planning and technical execution.Participate in regular shop walks and maintain direct visibility of panels in fabrication, assembly, wire, test, FAT, and field execution.
What you bring:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls/Automation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with controls emphasis, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related technical discipline; equivalent exceptional systems-integration experience may be considered.Typically 10+ years of progressively responsible industrial automation / systems-integration experience, including substantial direct engineering execution.Demonstrated strength in at least one of the following: electrical/control-panel engineering, PLC programming, SCADA/HMI, industrial networking/telemetry, systems architecture, or commissioning; working knowledge across the remainder.Strong understanding of UL 508A industrial control panels and practical familiarity with UL 891 switchboards and UL 845 motor control centers; ability to work effectively with UL-qualified manufacturing personnel.Experience with SolidWorks or comparable 3D/model-based electrical/mechanical design workflows; willingness and ability to operate in Tesco’s model-based engineering environment.Experience allocating technical resources across multiple concurrent projects and working with project managers in a matrix/project-delivery environment.Strong understanding of industrial electrical systems, control hardware, instrumentation, VFDs/motor controls, panel layout, wiring practices, industrial networks, FAT, startup, and field commissioning.Professional Engineer registration is valued where relevant but is not required for every candidate; technical credibility and demonstrated delivery performance are essential.
