Job Posting Title:
Sr Mechanical DesignerReq ID:
10160871Job Description:
Architecture & Facilities Engineering (A&FE) is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer to manage the inception, development, implementation, and sustainment of the full range of mechanical systems – HVAC, central plant, plumbing, and hydraulics/hydronics/compressed air – with independent, full ownership of above- and below-ground mechanical utilities and kitchen/food-and-beverage systems expertise.
The Senior Mechanical Designer leads design coordination across back-of-house and guest-visible (“show”) kitchen environments, applies judgment on evolving design-condition assumptions (e.g., observed humidity trends) beyond standard ASHRAE tables, prepares bid-level construction documents for review, signature, and sealing by a licensed Engineer of Record, and provides immediate support and response to reactionary projects.
You will report to the Manager or Senior Manager, Mechanical Engineering with DLR Architecture & Facilities Engineering.
Responsibilities/You will
Act as Owner’s Representative on projects from concept through construction at the Disneyland Resort, under the oversight of a licensed Engineer of Record.
Support the Engineer of Record, including preparing construction documents for review, signature, and sealing as needed; does not hold sealing/signing authority.
Act as a technical resource for colleagues with less mechanical engineering/design experience; motivate and oversee the work of others, including assigned interns.
Work independently, receiving minimal guidance from the Manager or Senior Manager, Mechanical Engineering.
Manage the design and development of contract documents for projects with in-house and outside resources to meet project scopes, schedules, and budgets.
Coordinate design activities and monitor field installations and demolition work that comply with specifications and code requirements.
Use and build experience to develop concept designs and Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
Provide immediate support and response to reactionary projects requiring urgent attention.
Independently own the full above- and below-ground mechanical utility scope – HVAC, central plant, plumbing, and hydraulics/hydronics/compressed air – with kitchen/food-and-beverage systems expertise, leading design coordination across back-of-house and guest-visible (“show”) kitchen environments.
Prepare drawings, engineering calculations, and specifications for review, signature, and sealing by a licensed Engineer of Record, ensuring all projects are designed to applicable local and state codes and statutes (California Mechanical Code, Title 24, ASHRAE standards).
Review shop drawing submittals and respond to vendor Requests for Information (RFIs) per Resort standards.
Conduct site visits to problem-solve issues and minimize schedule impacts.
Independently interface with consultants, contractors, and vendors, bringing a new perspective on existing solutions for complex, multi-system mechanical problems.
Partner with internal teams to develop, maintain, communicate, and enforce Walt Disney Company design guidelines, standards, master specifications, and details (including the Disney Master Design Specifications, DMGS).
Assist Project and Design Managers to resolve design compliance issues relating to project requirements; validate that item specifications are consistent with products installed before archiving manuals.
Build enhanced communications and expectations to successfully execute all projects.
Explain difficult or sensitive technical information to project stakeholders and work to build consensus across disciplines.
What We Look For
- 5+ years of mechanical engineering/design experience.
Demonstrated independent ownership of mechanical system design – HVAC, central plant, plumbing, and hydraulics/hydronics/compressed air – across the full system range, under the review of an Engineer of Record.
Demonstrated ability to motivate and oversee the work of others (including assigned interns) and to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
Familiarity with the California Mechanical Code, ASHRAE standards, and the California Energy Code (Title 24).
Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interface independently with consultants, contractors, and vendors.
Required Education
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (ABET-accredited or non-ABET-accredited programs both acceptable); a Professional Engineer (PE) license is not required for this Designer-track role.
Equivalent practical design experience may also be considered in lieu of a degree.
