Location & Schedule

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model. Employees work at Gateway Offices three days a week and work within the state of Colorado on their off-site days.

As a Senior Accountant, you will collaborate effectively with employees, management, and both internal and external stakeholders to optimize performance, foster creativity, and enhance problem‑solving capabilities. Your ability to work cooperatively with diverse teams will be key to achieving exceptional results. In addition, you will oversee fixed asset accounting, ensuring accurate tracking, reconciliation, and reporting of the airport’s capital assets.

Specifically, as the Senior Accountant you will:

  • Review and analyze data for propriety, correct coding, and proper documentation. Post transactions in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and City and County of Denver Fiscal Accountability Rules.

  • Generate and maintain reconciliations and amortization schedules for balance sheet accounts.  Research and resolve discrepancies periodically and post correcting journal entries as required.

  • Work with DEN’s budget and fiscal policy groups to correct general ledger coding discrepancies and process journal entries accordingly.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with DEN budget groups and DEN project managers to ensure required information is communicated to the accounting team.

  • Manage DEN’s accrual process by collaborating with budget and fiscal policy groups to calculate period, quarter, and year-end accruals.  Generate and process accrual journal entries accordingly.

  • Assist DEN’s Financial Reporting group with year-end audit preparation and quarterly/annual financial statement generation.

  • Work with stakeholders both internal and external to the City, respond to accounting inquiries, provide specialized and complex information and assistance with specific accounting transactions.

  • Perform other special duties and projects assigned by Accounting Supervisors and Managers.

  • Assist with annual capital asset and controlled asset inventory, as required by City and County of Denver Fiscal Accountability Rules (Capital Asset position).

  • Perform debt accounting and reporting activities, maintain financial systems and records regarding bonds and GASB 87 leases, research and review related journal entries, work with consultants to ensure compliance with arbitrage regulations, ensure records and supporting documents are maintained (General Ledger position)

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Three to five years of accounting/finance experience, preferably in the general ledger, debt, or capital asset fields.

  • Experience using Excel to simplify and maximize information reporting (pivot tables, filters, complex formulas, etc.)

  • Experience using Workday or another advanced ERP solution.

  • Prior general ledger or capital asset accounting experience within a large complex full-accrual entity.

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills; be detail-oriented, organized, and results-oriented.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.

  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional level accounting experience reconciling accounting discrepancies, analyzing expenditures, and preparing financial reports.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.
    Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.

  • License/Certifications: None
