Grovetown Quality Technician
REPORTS TO: Manufacturing Process Quality Manager

PURPOSE OF POSITION:
To perform in-process and final inspections of manufactured and purchased products and provide Quality support to foundry and machining operations. The Quality Technician is responsible for verifying product conformance to engineering, dimensional, material, and customer requirements, with a strong focus on dimensional inspection, calibration, precision measurement, engineering drawing interpretation, and the use of CMM and other metrology technologies. The applicant must be a self-starter capable of working independently and effectively with Quality, Manufacturing, and Engineering.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Overall & Quality Support:
- Promotes Safety and Housekeeping as Job #1 at all times by following all safety requirements and identifying and reporting safety concerns.
- Performs in-process, final, and returned-product inspections of cast and machined components.
- Inspects castings for dimensional and visual conditions and identifies applicable foundry and machining defects.
- Supports first-piece, part qualification, and other required inspections to verify conformance to engineering and customer requirements.
- Evaluates and documents nonconforming material and assists Quality, Manufacturing, and Engineering with disposition and corrective action activities.
- Creates SAP Quality notifications and maintains applicable inspection and nonconformance records.
- Supports Manufacturing with inspection activities and troubleshooting of dimensional, casting, machining, and other product quality concerns.
- Provides assistance with problem solving and root cause analysis related to product and process nonconformances.
- Other duties as assigned.
Dimensional Inspection & Metrology:
- Reads and interprets engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances, and inspection requirements.
- Applies GD&T and appropriate measurement techniques when evaluating dimensional requirements.
- Performs dimensional inspections using micrometers, calipers, height gages, bore gages, indicators, radius gages, surface plates, and other precision measurement equipment.
- Performs inspections using CMM, portable CMM, 3D metrology, and other computer-based measurement systems as required.
- Supports CMM and metrology software operation, inspection setup, data collection, analysis, and dimensional reporting.
- Selects appropriate measurement methods and equipment based on drawing requirements, tolerances, part size, and inspection needs.
- Prepares accurate dimensional inspection reports and communicates findings to Quality, Manufacturing, and Engineering.
- Assists Manufacturing Engineering and Quality with dimensional evaluations, drawing reviews, part qualification, and measurement-related issues.
- Supports the implementation and continued development of new measurement technologies, inspection equipment, software, and digital inspection methods.
Calibration & Measurement Equipment:
- Performs and coordinates calibration and verification activities for inspection and measurement equipment in accordance with established procedures and schedules.
- Maintains accurate calibration records, equipment identification, status, and traceability.
- Monitors calibration due dates and coordinates equipment availability to prevent overdue calibration.
- Evaluates calibration results and identifies out-of-tolerance or unacceptable equipment conditions for appropriate review and action.
- Assists with investigations involving inspection or measurement equipment found to be out of calibration.
- Maintains inspection equipment in proper working condition and coordinates repair, replacement, or verification as required.
- Supports improvements to calibration procedures, equipment controls, measurement methods, and calibration systems.
Foundry & NDT Support:
- Performs visual inspection of cast products and evaluates surface conditions and casting discontinuities.
- Performs or supports liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonic, and other NDT/NDE inspections as qualified and required.
- Obtains or maintains applicable NDT/NDE certifications based on departmental and business needs.
- Supports inspection and evaluation of foundry-related quality concerns, including dimensional conditions, casting defects, and process-related nonconformances.
- Works with Quality and Manufacturing personnel to identify recurring foundry or machining quality issues and support corrective actions.
- Maintains required NDT/NDE inspection and training records as applicable.
Quality Systems, Data & Technology:
- Maintains accurate inspection, calibration, and Quality records in SAP and other applicable systems.
- Uses SAP, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, metrology software, databases, and other digital tools for inspection, reporting, documentation, and data analysis.
- Reviews inspection and measurement data to identify trends, recurring issues, and opportunities for process improvement.
- Supports the implementation and continued development of Quality technology, electronic inspection methods, data collection, and reporting tools.
- Participates in ISO 9001 activities, internal audits, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assists in the development and revision of inspection methods, calibration procedures, work instructions, and Quality documentation.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
A four-year college degree, associate degree, technical degree, trade school diploma, or other relevant post-secondary education is preferred. Candidates without post-secondary education must have substantial directly related experience in dimensional inspection, metrology, calibration, machining, or Quality Control that demonstrates equivalent technical qualifications.
Experience with dimensional inspection and precision measurement equipment is required. Candidates must demonstrate strong engineering drawing interpretation and measurement skills. Experience in machining, foundry operations, or a related manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.
Experience with calibration systems, CMM, portable CMM, 3D metrology, or other computer-based inspection systems is preferred. Foundry inspection, casting defect recognition, NDT/NDE, SAP, or related Quality experience is also preferred.
Strong computer, analytical, and technology skills are required. Candidates must be comfortable working with quality and measurement data, electronic inspection records, reports, and analytical tools and demonstrate the ability to learn and apply new inspection technologies and digital Quality systems.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical requirements include, but are not limited to, bending, squatting, lifting up to 70 lbs., climbing, pushing, pulling, stretching, standing, and walking. Work is performed in foundry, machining, inspection, and other manufacturing environments with exposure to heat, noise, dust, machinery, and moving equipment.
