Recruitment Salary Range: $47,703 – $72,500
Salary Grade: NC12

This position currently qualifies as a hybrid telework option and includes extensive travel, overnight and weekend work.

The North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal is seeking a knowledgeable and committed Fire & Rescue Training/Inspector to deliver and manage statewide fire & rescue training and certification programs. This role conducts audits of training programs, prepares required monthly reports, supports standards development, and partners with agencies and associations across North Carolina. The position also serves on the State Emergency Response Team (SERT) with 24/7 on call responsibility.

Key Responsibilities:
• Deliver fire and rescue training, instructor qualification testing, and evaluations.
• Audit certification courses, live fire training, and prepare investigative reports when needed.
• Interpret and communicate Commission standards and national requirements (OSHA, NFPA).
• Assist with program and standards development, committee recommendations, and Certification Board support.
• Represent the Department at meetings, conferences, and workshops.
• Serve as a member of the State Emergency Response Team (SERT) with 24/7 on call responsibilities.
• Support line of duty death processing when requested.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences


  • Logistical experience utilizing trailers, props, and supplies for events coordinated on a statewide basis.
  • Experience with deployments under a declared state of emergency.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, local volunteer fire/rescue squads, municipal fire departments, professional organizations, and the public.
  • Working knowledge and ability to supervise and respond under hazardous conditions created by practical demonstrations of fire and rescue training procedures and during response activities related to State Emergency Response Team (SERT).

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate degree in Fire Science or related field from an appropriately accredited institution, certification as a Level II Instructor or Level II Inspector, and two years of experience in conducting state of North Carolina fire and rescue certification training programs (Programs should be on firefighting and rescue operations or certification standards or conducting fire inspections); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
