Join Our Team as a Pathology Technician
Are you ready to play a hands-on role in modern medicine? We are looking for a proactive Pathology Technician to join our high-energy Anatomic Pathology team. You’ll be the
"go-to" person
for our Pathologists and Surgeons, ensuring that every specimen is handled with care and every slide is ready for a breakthrough diagnosis.

through cross-campus coverage and specialized tasks like frozen section preparation. You are the
organized backbone
of the lab, managing the workflow that allows our physicians to provide the best possible care.
Qualifications
Education: HS Diploma/GED
Work Experience: Previous Lab experience is preferred
Responsibilities
Specimen Handling & Preparation
Demonstrates technical skills
required to prepare Histology and Cytology specimens. Retrieves all specimens
from surgery multiple times daily and matches them with requisitions. Verifies labeling
ensures two patient identifiers and specimen source are present; follows up on any labeling errors. Ensures proper fixation , including placing flow cytometry specimens in RPMI and refrigeration. Accessions specimens
and prepares cases for gross dictation while maintaining identifier accuracy. Assists PA or Pathologist
as requested during the grossing process.
Intraoperative & Technical Procedures
Assists on intraoperative procedures , including fine needle biopsy smears in CT/Angio suites and proper staining for review. Performs routine H&E staining
and embedding tissue for frozen sections. Sections frozen tissue specimens
and assists during intraoperative consultations. Ensures proper documentation
and labeling for all frozen section and fine needle specimens.
Laboratory Operations & Maintenance
Manages tissue processors , ensuring they start at appropriate times and communicating schedule deviations. Maintains equipment logs
for refrigerator/freezer temperatures and cryostats; performs decontamination as needed. Oversees supply inventory , including staining reagents, and places orders as necessary. Maintains workspace organization
and cleanliness in grossing and accessioning areas. Ensures regulatory compliance
with CAP guidelines and departmental policies.
Communication & Administrative Support
Acts as a liaison
between the Histology team, Pathologists, and submitting departments to resolve specimen issues. Provides exceptional service
by organizing work priorities to optimize turnaround time. Handles billing
by entering charges in
Epic
for frozen sections and outside consultation cases. Manages department communications , including answering calls and monitoring emails. Serves as backup Payroll editor , managing time corrections and biweekly sign-offs. Supports team flexibility
by cross-training and floating to the downtown campus as needed.

Compensation and Benefits
The compensation range for this position is $25.81per hour - $43.1per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
