Shape the Future of How WGU OperatesThe Senior Business Process Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, analyzing, and implementing institutional business processes that support the growth, service level, and cost performance needs of the university’s schools and shared services functions.
This role focuses on enhancing operational efficiency, streamlining workflows, and ensuring business processes align with institutional strategic goals. The Senior Business Process Engineer identifies opportunities for improvement, develops people, process, and technology solutions, and leads continuous improvement initiatives across the organization.
Working closely with project and program leaders, finance partners, analytics teams, business stakeholders, and technology professionals, this position drives business process redesign, re-engineering efforts, and the development of future-state operating models that support organizational transformation and student success.
The Senior Business Process Engineer plays a key role in the university’s largest and most strategic transformation initiatives.
*This is an in-office position working at our Corporate Headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the analysis, redesign, and optimization of complex business processes across one or more business units.
- Oversee department-level process improvement projects, ensuring stakeholder alignment, timely execution, and achievement of desired outcomes.
- Develop, track, and report on Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) to measure process improvement effectiveness and drive continuous improvement.
- Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure successful adoption of process changes and organizational alignment.
- Lead project teams and workgroups, providing direction and accountability for project success.
- Contribute to the design and maintenance of end-to-end business process architecture and process frameworks.
- Apply Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to analyze, improve, and optimize business processes.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for Lean and Six Sigma tools, methodologies, and best practices.
- Conduct detailed process analysis to improve academic operations, services, and organizational functions.
- Coach, train, and mentor employees and project teams in process optimization methodologies and tools.
- Utilize project management methodologies to plan workflows, allocate resources, and ensure project delivery.
- Create and maintain comprehensive business process architecture maps.
- Develop KPI and measurement frameworks to identify improvement opportunities and reduce operational waste.
- Lead day-to-day process improvement and redesign efforts while mentoring team members in process optimization practices.
- Design and implement operational and data-driven decision support systems to support a culture of continuous process improvement.
- Support business and cultural transformation initiatives through effective change management practices.
- Prepare and communicate project status updates to stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to promote a positive, student-focused environment.
- Model operational capacity, service levels, outcomes, and costs in partnership with Finance to identify and address supply and demand imbalances.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of process automation tools and their application in business process optimization.
- Experience using business intelligence and analytics tools such as Tableau, Power BI, and Minitab.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify trends, patterns, and actionable insights from complex datasets.
- Ability to identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with process redesign and implementation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present recommendations to senior leaders and communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking capabilities.
- Working knowledge of Agile, Waterfall, and other project management methodologies.
- Knowledge of Lean and Six Sigma principles, tools, and practices.
- Understanding of quality improvement methodologies and continuous improvement frameworks.
- Knowledge of business process architecture mapping and process design principles.
- Ability to work effectively in ambiguous and evolving environments.
- Demonstrated accountability, integrity, and commitment to delivering results.
- Strong leadership, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build effective relationships across diverse groups.
- Passion for organizational improvement and student-centered outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Service Systems Engineering, Operations Research, Supply Chain Management, Actuarial Science, or another relevant engineering, business, or technical discipline.
- Three (3) years of related professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree.
- Four (4) years of professional experience in a technical or engineering environment.
- Four (4) years of experience applying Lean and Six Sigma methodologies and tools for business process optimization.
- Prior experience in Business Process Engineering.
- Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification, or the ability to obtain certification within one to two years.
- Lean Silver certification, or the ability to obtain certification within one to two years.
