The Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Sacramento, CA is seeking a mission-driven Emergency Medicine Physician to join our growing Emergency Department at the Sacramento VA Medical Center (Mather, CA) . This role offers a modern, team-based practice environment where you can provide high-quality care, strengthen clinical operations, and help shape the future of Veteran emergency care.


About the Role

We are seeking an Emergency Medicine-trained physician , or a Family Medicine / Internal Medicine physician with significant Emergency Medicine experience , to provide both clinical and administrative services across the VA Northern California Health Care System (NorCal VAHCS) .

You will deliver independent care for acute, chronic, and same-day needs, overseeing the full spectrum of Veteran medical concerns-from cardiovascular and pulmonary disease to diabetes, mental health presentations, and complex multimorbidity.


Clinical & Administrative Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive Emergency Medicine care, including diagnostics, treatment planning, medication management, and specialty consultations.

  • Perform histories, physicals, diagnostic evaluations, order placement, medication reconciliation, and EMR documentation within CPRS .

  • Maintain timely compliance with TMS learning plans , mandatory training (ACLS, Moderate Sedation, Airway), clinical reminders, and safety protocols.

  • Oversee rotating residents and students , ensuring high-quality teaching and supervision.

  • Utilize EDIS for flow tracking and participate in monthly ED provider meetings.

  • Champion preventive care, coordination of care, reduced delays, and appropriate resource utilization.

  • Demonstrate high standards of customer service, communication, professionalism, and veteran-centered care.

  • Follow VA policies for Infection Control, Environment of Care, Emergency Preparedness, and safety reporting.


Who We're Looking For

  • Board-Certified or Board-Eligible Emergency Medicine physician
    OR

  • Family Practice / Internal Medicine physician with substantial Emergency Medicine experience

  • Strong clinical judgment, adaptability, and commitment to Veteran-centered care

  • Skilled in managing high-acuity and diverse ED presentations

  • Engaged in teaching, quality improvement, teamwork, and operational excellence


Schedule & Work Model

  • Sunday-Saturday variable shifts , totaling 40 hours/week

  • Compressed schedule option available

  • Mix of clinical duties, team leadership, flow management, and administrative responsibilities


Compensation & Federal Benefits

  • Salary: $300,000-$400,000 (negotiable based on experience)

  • Paid Time Off: 50-55 days/year

    • 26 annual leave

    • 13 sick leave

    • 11 federal holidays

    • up to 5 days CME

  • Retirement:

    • Federal pension (vests in 5 years)

    • Federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contributions
