  • Partner with operations and teams across the Kennecott value stream while developing technical expertise

We’re Finding Better Ways™ to provide the materials the world needs, now and in the future. Our values, care, courage and curiosity, guide how we work and how we treat each other.

About the role

We are looking for multiple Control Room Specialists to manage and optimize copper smelting processes from the central control room. You will monitor control systems, communicate operating strategies and coordinate with the operations team and other partners to support safe, efficient and sustainable copper production.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced industrial operations professional who can maintain situational awareness, prioritize changing needs and make sound decisions under pressure. Working a 12-hour rostered shift, you will help operating teams safely achieve production and quality targets while contributing to process-control improvements and best practices.

Reporting to the Control Room Supervisor and working collaboratively across the Smelter and wider Kennecott value stream, you will be:

What you’ll be doing

  • Promote safe work practices and operational discipline while maintaining accurate, high-quality control room logs and reports.
  • Monitor control systems and process conditions throughout the shift, identify emerging issues and coordinate timely responses to maintain safe and stable operations.
  • Communicate operating strategies, priorities and changing conditions clearly to the operations team and other relevant partners during each shift.
  • Coordinate with operations, maintenance and value-stream partners to safely meet production and quality targets, without direct people-management accountability.
  • Optimize area resources and process performance while identifying opportunities to improve control systems, Human-Machine Interface processes and operating efficiency.
  • Apply sound judgement to solve problems, make timely decisions, act at the appropriate level and escalate difficult or higher-risk situations when required.
  • Maintain strong situational awareness, actively listen and observe, and prioritize attention and support to meet changing operational needs and shift targets.
  • Receive emergency calls and direct the appropriate resources and communications in accordance with established emergency-response procedures.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
  • A high school diploma or GED. A bachelor’s degree in a related field is considered an asset.
  • Relevant experience in metals processing, smelting, manufacturing or another complex industrial environment.
  • Prior control room experience and demonstrated operational leadership capability, including coordinating work, influencing safe outcomes and escalating issues appropriately without formal people supervision.
  • Strong communication, situational awareness, multitasking, problem-solving and decision-making skills, including the ability to remain effective under pressure and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications. Experience in a collective bargaining environment and working knowledge of SAP, programmable logic controllers, distributed control systems or process historians such as PI are considered assets.

Role requirements: The successful candidate must be able to access operational areas of the Smelter. Required Smelter-access and respirator training will be provided through the Learning and Development team.

Even if your experience does not align with every preferred qualification, we encourage you to apply. Relevant transferable skills and industrial operating experience are valued.

What we offer

Be recognized for your contribution, your thinking and your hard work, and go home knowing you have helped the world progress.

  • A work environment where safety is always the number one priority
  • Competitive base salary reflective of your skills and experience with an annual incentive bonus
  • Access to top-tier family-friendly health programs including medical, prescription drug, dental, vision, life insurance coverage and various voluntary benefits
  • Excellent retirement plan including up to 6% defined company contribution and a generous 401(k) matching program
  • Attractive share ownership plan
  • Comprehensive leave policies covering the moments that matter, including paid time off, paid holidays and paid bereavement leave
  • A generous parental leave policy to support quality time with your new family
  • Discount programs for leisure purposes and access to Personify Health with incentives supporting your wellbeing
