The Lab Helper assists in all non-clinical tasks of the laboratory.  The individual performs basic clerical and maintenance duties, such as but not limited to: preparing samples for testing- centrifuging and aliquoting; storing and retrieving samples, distributing samples to workbenches and other departments; discarding samples; storing blood in the cold room (if applicable). The individual is able to receive and follow direct instructions and supervision from staff and shift supervisors. The Lab Helper is expected to be able to recognize issues and problems and address them as appropriate. 

Essential Functions:
•    Receive samples and/or slides
•    Record equipment maintenance to ensure proper operation of equipment. Maintain and update log sheets and prepare paper requisitions for shipment or storage
•    Report and handle basic facility issues with bioengineering and engineering including: electrical, plumbing, safety, and others as applicable
•    Collect sharp container, Chemical and Biohazard waste.  Keep satellite and main accumulation station clean and organized. Keep a clean and well organized work area
•    Label slides, file and retrieve Cytogenetics and Molecular labs fixed pellet, slides, patient folder all other material 
•    Perform any other laboratory related tasks and functions as department requires under the direction of a supervisor and/or lab director
•    Monitor supplies stocks. Receive, date and store supplies as per defined guidelines. Monitor supplies in each work station and refill as needed
•    Organizing/ storage and retrieval of Cytogenetic specimens until discarding
•    Daily maintenance and cleaning of the all work stations in Cytogenetics and Molecular lab areas in accordance with Infection Control guidelines
•    Clerical duties in the Cytogenetics and Molecular labs.  Perform order entry and update in the LIS. Keep logs, prepare paper requisitions for shipment or storage
•    Operate washing and drying machines, autoclave
•    Conform to all infection controls procedures
•    Answer phone calls, provide information, answer basic questions, or recognize who to transfer the issue to, if applicable

Qualifications:
•    High School Diploma/GED Hospital and laboratory related required; Associate’s Degree preferred
•    Must have experience with Laboratory Information System, Document Scanning, Microsoft Excel & PowerPoint, Knowledge of machinery (autoclave, glassware washer and dryer), handling of biohazard waste
•    Knowledge of the procedures, policies for Cytogenetics and Molecular labs required
