Job Summary
The Division of Neonatology, Weiler Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), is recruiting an experienced full-time nurse practitioner to deliver specialized care to our high-risk infant patients. The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, Weiler NICU is a level IV, regional perinatal center located in the Bronx, NY.
A successful candidate will manage and provide care for patients requiring neonatal intensive care in collaboration with a multidisciplinary medical team, attend high risk deliveries, and perform common procedures such as intubation, placement of central lines, and lumbar punctures. Experience in the management of neonates that require high frequency ventilation, pre and post op surgical care, and therapeutic hypothermia is preferred. In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for the provision, coordination, and assurance of comprehensive neonatal critical, intensive and continuing care for preterm and full-term infants, and pertinent standards of care, the diagnosis of illness and physical conditions, and performance of therapeutic, corrective, and prescriptive measures of the critically ill neonate. Additional responsibilities include antenatal consultations and facilitating family engagement and shared decision making with the infant’s parent(s). There will be an opportunity to participate or initiate in clinical and quality improvement research and development of clinical management guidelines. The coverage for the NICU would be for the flex position which includes both day and night shifts as needed.
The position has a Rotation Schedule including holidays and weekends and may require flexibility in working the day shift, based on operational needs.
Essential Functions
- Work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team including the attending neonatologist to develop and implement the therapeutic plan of care for a group of patients and ensure communication with family members.
- Provide consultation about the therapeutic regimen to the nursing staff responsible for the patient's care in the hospital setting.
- Facilitate the continuity of care across the continuum of services, e.g., home care, transfer to other facilities, post-discharge primary and specialty care appointments.
- Participate in designated activities related to advanced practice professional standards and regulations of relevant outside agencies.
- Perform complete health history, physical examination, and psychosocial assessment of patients within the designated practice or clinical unit.
- Order customary laboratory, radiological and diagnostic studies per practice protocols, differentiates between normal/abnormal findings and follows protocols for abnormal findings, which may include referral to consulting physicians per customary pattern of the attending MD or with the collaborating physician.
- Formulate the plan of care, along with the attending physician, patient, and family, based on expected goals of care and length of stay
- Prescribe in-patient and discharge medications according to New York State law, including controlled substances with DEA authorization. Prescribes medical equipment, devices, physical and occupational therapy, and home health services per practice protocol.
- Promotes own professional growth and development in clinical and managerial role.
- Maintains current expertise in area of practice.
- Serve as a clinical expert and resource for the education of peers and other health professionals.

Minimum Qualifications:
- New York State License for a Nurse Practitioner and current registration or valid permit to practice in New York State as an NP
- Drug Enforcement Authority (DEA) registration
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
- Neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) certification or 3 years of NICU experience for all other NP specialties is preferred.
