Position Summary

Help fulfill the university’s mission by teaching students and providing content expertise with a primary emphasis in string education. Duties include teaching music education courses (String Methods, String Practicum, Teaching Strategies, and String Pedagogy as needed); overseeing the string education program including supervising student teaching, interacting with public school personnel, and serving on secondary education advisory boards and committees; be active and engaged in professional associations and/or other teacher education networks (NAfME, ASTA, etc.); being fully supportive of and advocate for the mission of the university and outcomes of the Department of Music; acting as an integral, engaged, and supportive member of the String Area, including participation in jury exams and possible performance collaboration with other faculty.

Secondary duties may include applied studio teaching (all string instruments considered), orchestral conducting (various ensemble opportunities), and classroom teaching in the following areas:

• Music technology

• Music theory

• Music history

• Other music courses

Additional responsibilities include advising students and other department and university assignments.

Throughout their careers, all BYU–Idaho faculty are expected to actively pursue professional development opportunities in learning and teaching and ongoing scholarly development within their discipline.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Advanced degree required (master’s or doctorate) in music or related field. Evidence of successful secondary-level classroom teaching and ensemble directing is required. Applicants must have demonstrated excellence in musicianship and teaching, including modeling strong performance skills on their instrument, and effective rehearsal strategies and methods that achieve success in observable learning outcomes. Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to and potential for excellence in teaching.

Work Schedule

Full-time faculty members teach 36 load hours annually, across Fall, Winter, and Spring Semesters; this total includes up to 6 load hours of professional development. In the days immediately preceding and following semesters, faculty members attend meetings, grade papers, perform professional development activities, etc. Semesters last approximately 14 weeks, and annual faculty contracts cover 47.5 weeks.
